What is ethyl carbonate?

Ethyl carbonate (EC) is a colorless, flammable liquid with a slightly sweet odor. It is also known as ethyl ethylene carbonate or carbonic acid ethyl ester.

EC is used as a solvent and as a component in the production of various materials such as plastics, coatings, and pharmaceuticals. It also has potential use as an electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries.

EC is soluble in organic solvents but is insoluble in water. It has a high boiling point of 126°C and a low melting point of -40°C.

EC is not considered highly toxic, but it can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory system upon contact. It is also a flammable liquid, and care should be taken when handling it around heat sources or flames.
